The only superhero movie that matters
Release date: July 29, 2005
Director: Mike Mitchell
Who should watch this movie: People who like DC comics but hate DC movies. People whose favorite Marvel movie is Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
When should you watch this movie: When the kids you’re babysitting suggest watching Frozen again.
The sell: Sky High is just another teen movie but with the added spice of super powers. Super high schoolers attend Sky High, a floating campus….high….in the sky….very clever. Freshman are sorted into heroes and sidekicks based on the ferocity of their powers and voila, the classic high school hierarchy is replicated. Actually, every high school movie trope is replicated (read: parodied) in this movie: Misfit loner kid attempts to navigate the high school social scene, parental expectations, crushes on the popular hot girl, and evil villain takeover. All the classics in one. This movie strikes the perfect balance between dumb and funny, and requires absolutely no emotional investment to be entertaining. It’s an easy but still highly satisfying viewing experience. Bonus: If you had a crush on Layla when you watched this movie in 5th grade, you’re gay now.
