The sell: If anyone ever asks you what the male gaze is, show them this movie. Or maybe start with Transformers and then show them this movie. This film is about one man’s relationship (and by relationship I mean sex-life) with two different women, neither of whom are written with any depth. We’re meant to feel sorry for this guy because he has a kid he didn’t want as a result of his shitty choices, but really it’s just frustrating. Watching him fantasize about his past “relationship” [with the woman he cheated on with his current co-parent] is not some kind of revolutionary non-linear storytelling, rather it’s a gratuitous self-indulgence by Noé who clearly sees himself in Murphy and wants to brag about his sexual prowess while remaining sympathetic. I do sometimes wonder how Zoë Kravitz feels about her husband’s penis being on Netlifx.
