Who should watch this movie: Fans of Mad Max. Comic book readers. Folks who love a franchise
When should you watch this movie: When the world is in flames around you and you need to watch Charlize Theron kill some people.
The sell: The Old Guard is a perfect example of what happens when bad writing meets good direction and great acting. The concept for this movie (squad of immortal warriors) isn’t necessarily original or all that interesting, but Prince-Bythewood and Charlize Theron bring a lot to the table. The result is a solid introduction to what is likely to be an exciting franchise. Based on a comic and written by a comic-book writer, there are moments in the script that are awkward and cringe. It’s impressive that the cast was able to salvage some genuinely satisfying scenes from what is a truly lackluster script. A lot of what keeps this movie from falling totally off the deep end of rotten tomatoes is the action. The actions sequences are gorgeously choreographed and just the right amount of gorey. I need to reiterate that Charlize Theron CARRIES this movie. Not only does her charisma wring every ounce of humanity out of the clunky script, but she does most of her own stunts and she does them SO well. Yes, this movie isn’t amazing and it’s a little predictable but I still think everyone should see it. BONUS: Unkillable gays
