The sell: Singing in the Rain is easy watching. There’s a lot of glitz and glam and not a lot of substance. There isn’t much thematic material to grapple with and that’s part of the charm. In this movie, a film studio, through a comical process of trial and error, attempts to put out its first “talkie.” There is a lot of singing and dancing in the process and the right amount of hilarity to make it interesting. Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor are talented, plain and simple. Their skill and commitment to craft is apparent here more than any other picture and the result is a timeless classic.
