Who should watch this movie: Hopeless romantics. Cancers. Fashion historians. Fans of the enemies to lovers trope.
When should you watch this movie: When you miss your sibling(s). When you’re starting to see some Kiera Knightley hate online and need to reaffirm your stan status.
The sell: I believe that this is the best Jane Austen adaptation of the bunch, including the 1995 Pride and Prejudice but only because that version was made for TV and is 7 hours long. Part of what makes this movie good is the source material. Pride and Prejudice is in my opinion Austen’s best work largely because it’s the saltiest. This whole story has been imbued with attitude and I love it. The story explores romance, reputation, sisterly love, and walking; all important themes with layers of complex emotion. This movie brings a rich visual texture to these themes, enveloping the viewer in satin and harpsichord music. The soundtrack is subtle but gorgeous and complements the soft light of the cinematography. Kiera Knightley certainly stands out as Elizabeth Bennet, but is supported by a powerful ensemble cast. Even the smaller performances by Jena Malone and Carry Mulligan are thoughtful and memorable. Despite being a period drama based on a classic, the production feels fresh and accessible even in 2020. Maybe especially in 2020?
My favorite is still the BBC 7 hour version, but I will say that this version sold my kids on Jane Austen. Yay.
