Drinking Buddies

Ok I love ~indie~ film, sue me

Release date: March 13, 2013
Director: Joe Swanberg
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: White people on the northside of Chicago. People who love IPA’s (yes there’s a lot of overlap there). People in long term relationships (4+ years)

When should you watch this movie: When you’re in love with your best friend. When you’re unhappily single but not sure if you want a relationship relationship.

The sell: Drinking buddies is an excellent character study. I did not expect such a nuanced performance from Olivia Wilde or from Jake Johnson OR from Anna Kendrick but all three of them really deliver. This movie is quiet and advances its narrative covertly, through offhand comments, glances and awkward pauses. You’re left feeling heartbroken, even though nothing really happened. Drinking buddies interrogates friendship and the boundaries between platonic and romantic love. We know that those lines are blurry but this movie shows us how and why.
