Who should watch this movie: People who have seen the 1993 version. Fans of Firefly.
When should you watch this movie: When you need a good laugh. Before going out to the club with your friends. When you have a cocktail in hand.
The sell: This movie is a good companion to the 1993 adaptation, and I recommend watching both of them. They are two very different takes on the same story, and both are fun but for different reasons. For one, Whedon takes his version of Much Ado into 2012, and places it on a familiar backdrop. Modern sets, modern costumes, and somewhat modern relationships. Despite being in black and white, this version feels newer and fresher than its predecessor. A not insignificant contributor to that effect is Alexis Denisof as Benedick. Denisof breathes new life into this role, with none of Branagh’s flair but all of his swagger. His charisma is the brevity needed to carry this movie across the finish line and into the “recommended” category. Warning: Watching this movie will make you want to shoot your own Much Ado About Nothing adaptation in the backyard.
