The secretary does all the work
Release Date: October 3, 1941
Director: John Huston
Who should watch this movie: Fans of BBC crime dramas. People who plan to quit smoking this summer. People who have read Mary Astor’s diary.
When should you watch this movie: When you’re in the mood for something fun but not funny.
The sell: The Maltese Falcon is a textbook Noir film with all the satisfying features that come with that moniker: Mysterious detective with dubious morals, sexy lady client with dubious morals, a host of quirky characters with dubious morals. The mystery draws you in immediately and keeps you interested as new information is revealed gradually and then all at once. It’s nice to be genuinely surprised at a movie and this is a good movie to be surprised by. If nothing else, watch this movie for all of Bogart’s sarcastic quips and an excuse to say “You’re a good man, sister,” to all of your friends after the movie is over.
