The Constant Gardener

Not a romance movie

NO

Release date: August 31, 2005
Director: Fernando Meirelles
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: People making their way methodically through Ralph Fiennes’ filmography

When should you watch this movie: When you need to be reminded that Big Pharma is evil because you forgot for some reason.

The sell: Rachel Weisz was in The Mummy so maybe we can forgive her for also being in this movie. I may be prone to not liking this film, as it was presented to me as “a romantic movie starring Ralph Fiennes” and it is 100% not that. This movie has 1) exploitation of post-colonial devastation in Africa, 2) deterioration of a marriage due to miscommunication, and 3) white savior complex.  Everything you need for a bad movie not worth your time. Gorgeous cinematography cannot make up for this movie’s failings. I’ve heard that the book is better than the film (surprising, I know), but after sitting through this disappointing feature, I’m really not interested.
