The sell: Mansfield Park is the weakest link in the Jane Austen film adaptation chain. The novel itself is IMO the least likeable of Austen’s publications, as it has the least likeable characters and the least satisfying plot. Fanny is not a sympathetic protagonist in the novel. She is annoyingly superior and condescending and she is not even the worst character. The movie attempts to make Fanny a little more likeable. Instead of being “prudish” and arrogant she is quiet and awkward, but all this does is make the plot less interesting.
