Kids

Too real

MAYBE

Release date: July 28, 1995
Director: Larry Clark
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: Film students. Fans of Richard Linklater’s edgier stuff.

When should you watch this movie: When you’re making your way through the “classics”

The sell: Kids is on one hand a “must see” and on the other hand, very hard to recommend. Kids is about exactly that, kids going about their day in the city. However, this is not the wholesome image of children that we are used to or that adults care to acknowledge. It’s gritty, violent, and at times scary. The characters get up to assorted debauchery and not the lighthearted fun kind. There is a lot of sex in this movie, but in no way is it sexy. It’s disturbing and sad. But more than anything, it’s realistic. When people look back on their childhoods with mild disgust and horror, it’s because growing up on the streets of New York is not like the movies. It’s like this one particular movie.

CW Sexual violence, graphic violence
