Who should watch this movie: People prepared to deal with the ethical grey zone of viewing anything touched by Roman Polanski.
When should you watch this movie: In the middle of the afternoon so you have time to have a strong drink after the movie and before going to sleep that evening.
The sell: I hate that this movie is so good. Jack Nicholson is at his best here, and his performance does most of the heavy lifting. Chinatown is a story of people at their worst and the circumstances that lead them there. It exposes the structures in place that keep monsters in power and protect evil men. It is clear that those with the best of intentions are always bound to lose. It’s gritty, it’s real, it’s deeply upsetting, and it’s also directed by Roman Polanski which adds a whole new layer of complexity.
