Atomic Blonde

James Bond who?

Release date: July 28, 2017
Director: David Leitch
Language: English

Who should watch this movie: Fans of Action. People who liked Mad Max: Fury Road. People who like the 80’s new wave.

When should you watch this movie: When you want to have a Good Time. When you’re in the mood for an action movie but don’t want to watch the Bourne trilogy again.

The sell: This movie gets top marks in every “action movie” category. It has an exciting story that unfolds slowly enough to create suspense but fast enough that you’re kept on your toes. The fight scenes are brilliantly choreographed, shot and acted. The soundtrack is phenomenal and fits perfectly with the movie’s setting, (Berlin in ‘89). Charlize Theron is the spy that Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig all wish they could be. For a movie packed with some of the most exciting (and ambitious) stunts I have seen on screen to date, Theron’s performance is impossibly subtle. She is inscrutable but charismatic, powerful but not invulnerable.  I could write a whole essay about use of color in the movie as well, but really you should just watch it. It’s a visual treat on top of everything else. I do wish that Atomic Blonde did more to fight the “Bury Your Gays” trope, but I guess we can’t have everything.
