What the fuck did I just watch?
Release Date: February 23, 2018
Director: Alex Garland
Who should watch this movie: People who liked Ex Machina. People who want to see Natalie Portman act in a well written movie and not the star wars prequels or Closer. People who watched Close Encounters when they were a little too young.
When should you watch this movie: When the real world is just too much and you need to panic about another world that also has Tessa Thompson in it.
The sell: Gorgeous visual effects that don’t distract or detract from the compelling story. This movie, like a lot of Garland’s work, is about processing loss and trauma. The whole film can really be viewed as a metaphor for grieving and/or the way grief shapes and changes you. Should all the characters just have gone to therapy instead of walking into the shimmer? Yes! Was it cool to watch them do it anyways? Also yes.
