YES

Release date: April 25, 2001
Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Language: French

Who should watch this movie: Romantics. Optimists.

When should you watch this movie: When you’re inside on a rainy day. When you are in love.

The sell: Amelie does everything right. It’s cute but not cloying, and quirky but not overdone. It’s a sweet story about two lonely souls coming together; turned into an adventure film by the imaginative heroics of the titular character. Amelie lives in her own head, but despite her isolation does not hold the world in contempt. Rather, her quiet observation is filled with affection for those around her and she has a deep appreciation for the minutiae of daily life. She takes it upon herself to spread joy in her own unique way; convoluted but brilliant. It’s impossible not to love Amelie, and by extension this movie. Extra points awarded for unique color story and soundtrack.
